Stand Under the Canopy: Creating Protective and Empowering Spaces for Growth

Great leaders do not seek the spotlight, they create shelter.

They understand that leadership is not about standing above others, but about creating the conditions under which others can flourish.

At Seeds of Knowledge, we use the metaphor of standing under the canopy to describe this aspect of leadership. In nature, a canopy offers protection and nurtures life beneath it. It shelters young plants from harsh winds and excessive heat. It filters light in ways that support healthy growth. It provides a stable microclimate where diverse life can thrive.

In schools, leadership can, and must, serve a similar function. Leaders create the emotional, psychological, and professional shelter within which staff, learners, and the wider community can take risks, learn, and grow.

This does not mean leaders shield people from all challenges. On the contrary, a healthy canopy allows for the right amount of exposure and stretch, balanced with support and safety.

As Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum wisely observed:

"He who does not serve others cannot lead them."

Leadership as service is the heart of standing under the canopy. It is leadership that asks:

  • How am I creating an environment where people feel safe to learn, innovate, and contribute?

  • How am I protecting my team from unnecessary stress, distraction, or toxicity, so they can focus on what matters most?

  • How am I modelling humility, humanity, and purpose-driven leadership?

When leaders cultivate this kind of protective and empowering space, they enable deep professional growth and authentic engagement. Staff are more willing to try new approaches, reflect on their practice, and lean into collaborative learning. Learners experience a school climate where their voices matter, their identities are respected, and their potential is seen.

Standing under the canopy also means that leadership is not about ego. The leader does not need to be the tallest tree. In fact, the most effective leaders often go unnoticed, because their canopy has created a flourishing environment where others shine.

At Seeds of Knowledge, we remind leaders that a school’s canopy is not built by a single person. It is co-constructed, through shared values, relational trust, strong cultural norms, and leadership that is distributed and inclusive.

And like any ecosystem, a school’s canopy must be tended. If neglected, it can become brittle, overly hierarchical, or fragmented. Wise leaders pay continual attention to the tone and climate of their leadership, listening for signs of erosion, and nurturing practices that sustain collective flourishing.

Yet even with a strong canopy, there are moments when leaders must provide something even more grounded, a sense of deep steadiness amid uncertainty. Leadership calls not only for protection and empowerment, but for anchoring presence, which brings us to our next reflection: dropping the anchor.
